The Hickey group focuses on hybrid inorganic/polymeric materials synthesis, self-assembly, and property characterization. We are developing materials fabrication guidelines for controlling well-organized nanostructures with potential applications related to energy, optical, structural, and catalytic technologies. The work in the Hickey group primarily focuses on three areas of research that will advance the field of functional nanomaterials 1) ligand-directed assembly of inorganic nanoparticles into hierarchical structures, 2) confined polymerizations within nanostructured materials, and 3) design of functionalized polymers containing frustrated Lewis pairs that selectively interact with gas molecules. The overall theme of the research is to utilize a combination of inorganic, materials, and polymer chemistry to create hierarchical, supramolecular structures.
